6 Things you MUST Consider Before Purchasing Web Hosting

in Wordpress Hosting

It is easier than ever to create a professional web presence these days. In the early days of the web, you either needed to know the necessary code for building a website or hire a web designer to do it for you. Today amazing software like WordPress & the Thesis Theme had made it possible for anyone to build a great looking website to attract interested parties without any coding experience. Of course, before you can start building a site, you need some web hosting and that brings us to the purpose of this post.

There are plenty of hosting companies out there to choose from and most of them do a pretty decent job and will meet most users needs for under $10 a month. Before you purchase a plan though, here are 6 things that you need to factor in to your decision process.

1. Does the host provide a free domain name for life?

Registering a domain and getting web hosting are two different things. Anyone can get a domain from a popular registrar like GoDaddy or 1and1 Internet which typically cost around $10 per year. After you have a domain, you still have to find hosting though. So if you plan on keeping your website for a long time, you can save some money in the long run by going with a hosting company that offers a free domain for life along with your hosting package.

2. Can you add additional domains to an existing hosting plan?

Some hosting plans allow you to add additional domains to your existing package. If down the road you decide you want to start a new site, you only need to register a new domain with a registrar and then add it to your existing package instead of going out and purchasing another $10 a month hosting package. Maybe you never plan on creating another site, but since this feature is included when you go with some of the better hosting plans, you might as well pick a host that includes this offer.

3. Does the host provide adequate storage, bandwidth and databases?

These features vary a great deal on hosting packages. Basically the more the better. Too few of any of these three features and you could find your site’s growth options very limited. When you are comparison shopping, keep these items in mind.

4. What kind of support does the host provide?

A host with great support makes all the difference. Nothing is more frustrating then when your site is down and you can’t get a hold of anyone to help you get it back up. So when I’m looking into a hosting package, I always look at the support options offered to make sure that I can get the help I need when I need it.

5. Is Fantastico or 1 Click WordPress Installation Available?

I like to keep things simple. Installing new software on your site, like a WordPress Blog or a phpBB Forum, can be quite tedious. You have to download the software from the developer’s site, upload it to your site, create a MySQL database, and then install the software on your site. A lot of the better hosts include a software package called Fantastico and can do all this for you automatically. You just click on “Create a WordPress Blog” and presto it is there and waiting for you. Its not terribly difficult to do this with a host that doesn’t offer Fantastico, but it sure makes it a lot easier if you have one that does.

6. What’s it Going to Cost?

There are thousands of web hosts out there to choose from. You can find hosting packages that start at a couple bucks a month but they often skimp on some of the important things I’ve outlined in this post. So before you decide to go with a $2 a month plan, make sure it has everything you need. Hosting has become really inexpensive in today’s world but that doesn’t mean you should always go with the cheapest package. Besides, you can find a great plan for about a quarter a day or $7 – $10 a month that has everything you need. On the other end, don’t buy a package that is more than you need. Why spend $30 a month or more on a plan that has way more than you need? My advice is to start out with a good $7 a month plan with a good hosting company and then if you need a larger package, you can always upgrade at a later date.
